What should I know before getting a lip filler?

11 mins read

You are considering getting a lip filler for the first time, but you want to find out more before you get those perfect, plump lips? We’re here to help and get you familiar with this simple, effective, yet very popular process that will help you get that look you’re after. There are a couple of things you need to be aware of before you start with the first step.

Without further ado, let’s begin.

What is a lip filler?

Lip filler is used for lip augmentation. This refers to a procedure in which chemical compounds are injected into your lips, making them plumper, achieving the lush and sexy look. Lip filler may refer specifically to the type of compounds used in the procedure, but mostly it’s the term we use to define the actual procedure.

Lip fillers are based on hyaluronic acid or HA. This compound is actually naturally present in the body, but over time it decreases its presence and the composition. In return, we get saggy skin or thinner skin. HA is safe to use, and won’t cause any lumps inside the lips.

Is a lip filler permanent?

Results of this procedure aren’t permanent. Depending on the type you used, the amount, and several other factors, you will have to repeat the procedure eventually. This is a distinct advantage if you change your mind at some point in the future, and you want to roll back to your natural lips.

Lip augmentation is one of the fastest growing and most popular facial procedure in the United States. In addition, it shows massive growth in other parts of the globe as well.

Why would you need a lip filler?

You may choose to get a lip filler if you want to get bigger, more attractive lips. Some people choose to get them to feel better about themselves, some even go for lip fillers to shine on a party.

Lip fillers are also used by women who have too small or too thin lips. This isn’t something that makeup can change, but this procedure can. With it, you can match the lips to look more linked with the rest of the face and compliment your look even more.

Some women even use the procedure to feel more attractive and turn some heads around. And it can make sense. From the evolutionary perspective, men tend to consider bigger, fuller lips sexier, because subconsciously they link full lips with womanhood and fertility.

How long does getting a lip filler procedure last?

Getting a lip filler can last anywhere between 30 minutes and a few hours. The duration is determined by the amount of filler you will inject and also the type of the filler you are using. There is no need to add that a doctor who is performing a procedure can significantly affect the time needed.

Once done, you don’t have any other processes or additional procedures to complete. However, you do need to stay in bed for a couple of hours. This is precaution rather than a mandatory thing to do. Most women decide to go home or shopping immediately after the procedure.

When getting a lip filler – how big should you go?

How big should you go depends only on your individual preference. In general, each women wants a different option, and each one can discuss the best result with the doctor. On the other side, we can see three primary levels.

Are there any risks involved?

Generally speaking, lip injections with fillers are safe and as such there are no major risks, side effects or complications, however, since we aren’t here to provide medical advice – it is important that you consult board certified doctors or plastic surgeons before getting this cosmetic procedure to find out all about possible risks and complications.

Some of the risks may include small skin eruptions, swelling and bruising, bleeding from the injection sites, cold sores and infection. The bottom lip can feel a bit heavy for a while. Some recommend taking Omega 3 rich nutrients like fish oil to reduce bruising and swelling. Generally speaking, all of these are easy to treat and they occur extremely rarely, but you should have it in mind when consulting with your doctor.

If you’re wondering can you feel lip fillers when kissing – don’t worry, kissing doesn’t feel noticeably different.

Is getting a lip filler a painful process?

Many of you may believe that lip augmentation is as painful as any other form of plastic surgery. Luckily, the truth is different. Believe or not, there is only a low pain you can endure without problems with some numbing cream! Not a single person had to stop procedure due to pain so you can get a clear idea how pain-free it actually is.

Can the lip filler be removed from my lips somehow?

You can remove lip filler when needed. Keep in mind that only hyaluronic acid fillers – those on the hyaluronic acid base can be removed. Another chemical, known as Hyaluronidase is used for this purpose. It dissolves HA and your body removes it from the tissue in a natural process. Some dermal fillers that are based on Poly-L-lactic acid cannot be removed.

Keep in mind that most lip fillers will last about 6 months and after that, you would need to re-do them. For example, Restylane and Juvaderm last 6 months. Collagen type lasts 3 months while Vollure can last up to 18 months.

The final word

Lip fillers are simple and very effective. Kylie Jenner seems to like them. Fuller lips for some women may be the key improvement to boost their self-confidence and achieve the look they always wanted.
